Okay. Hey everybody, welcome back. I’m here with Lyall from Browns Roofing, and I’m going to be asking him a bunch of questions about roofing that you should know about – how to get fair roofing prices in Edmonton, specifically when it comes to knowing who you’re hiring when it comes to a roofing contractor.
So, a few weeks ago, you were in our offices and you were explaining a couple scenarios where some senior citizens were kind of taken advantage of. Maybe you can talk a little bit about that and and how that happens.
Yeah. So well, it was actually came from another contractor. He was just sharing a story with me how he was doing a roof in this particular neighborhood. Just from what he told me, the range for the price of these particular roofs, I guess you could say, were in the range of like 9 to 11,000. The neighboring house, there was an older gentleman, got his roof done. He had a brief conversation with him, and the elderly man told him that he paid $27,000 for his roof replacement and told my friend that he got the best roof and he’s got the best shingle, blah blah blah.
Why Seniors Are at Higher Risk of Roofing Scams in Edmonton
So he asked him what shingle it was. He told him. He said, “Well, I’m putting that exact shingle on on on your neighbor’s house, and we’re only charging them like 9,000 something.” So, I mean, you just do the math. Like whoever that that person was basically robbed this, you know, senior citizen.
Yeah.
Triple the price pretty much.
Yeah.
Yeah. That’s insane. So, this happens often to people who are, you know, seniors, and, you know, it’s really a tragedy when it does happen. So, what are a couple of things that you know this senior citizen could have done to avoid being taken advantage of?
Well, I would say, if you do have a elderly mother or father or parents, and they are looking for any contract work just in general, it would be recommended to be there during the process. If you’re an elderly person, you could maybe reach out to your neighbor or just anyone really to maybe assist you or go over the contract, the quote, the estimate, or whatever it may be, just so you know they have a clear understanding who they’re dealing with. Because like let’s be honest, like a elderly person, you know, they might not be able to do the same type of research that, you know, like a younger person can, I guess you could say.
How to Properly Compare Roofing Quotes Before You Hire a Contractor
Yeah, I mean, they don’t have, you know, the use of they may not be able to use the internet or search functions like everybody else does. So yeah, getting some help with that would be good. What about getting additional quotes? That’s probably a—
Yeah, that’s and that’s and that’s another I was just going to say that. Like and obviously get multiple quotes and just, you know, so you could do a comparison. And like I said, if you could, if you’re an elderly person, you could reach out to one of your kids, your neighbor, or whoever just to maybe give you a hand and help you with that process.
Yeah. So let’s go through the process of when you are doing a quote for a customer, senior citizen or not. So, what do you give them? How do you start the process? And what does that look like? Just so that when people are getting a quote on a roof, no matter who they are, what should they expect?

Like it’s kind of risky if you’re getting pressure sold on a roof replacement, and they’re trying to get you to sign right here on the spot. I would consider that a red flag.

Yeah, I was just going to say that for sure. Like that’s a red flag if they need you to sign right there on the dotted line without any, you know, other due diligence. That raises up some red flags immediately, right?
Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. And you hear about it all the time. This isn’t the first story I’ve heard where an elderly person gets, you know, scammed. But this is one of the more extreme cases, I guess you could say. And that’s part of it. Like they get, you know, I don’t want to say forced, but—
Yeah.
In some ways they do, to sign on the spot to, you know, for a a contract they might not even, you know, understand, you know—
Yeah.
To an extent. So, there’s not only a bottom line price that’s involved in that, but what is the warranty? Is that comp—how long has that company been in business for? How long is their warranty? What does the warranty cover? What doesn’t it cover?
Yeah.
Right. And you guys you guys go over all of that with your customers, right?
Yes. Yeah. We’re very clear on everything. And we explain everything in full detail from the warranties, from the workmanship warranties to the manufacturer warranties. So, now we’re coming into the the winter months, into the colder seasons. And you know, it’s time for thing—things happen to roofs, things happen to houses in the winter time. What are a couple of things that people can do to kind of look at their house and and maybe maybe it’s time for them to contact Brown’s Roofing for an inspection and possibly a re-roof? Well, curled shingles are, you know, that’s an obvious sign. Blown off shingles, that’s another sign. Just I would say those are the two main signs. It’s, you know, it’s time to get an assessment done and possibly get your roof done.

Oh, yeah. We get calls all year round, right through the winter, summer, it doesn’t matter what month it is. And yeah, we work right through the winter. So, and that’s when you’ll see a lot of leaks happen during the winter. You know, you get a cold day, you get some snow, the next day it’s a little warmer, it starts melting, and then that’s usually when the leaks do show up more often even than an actual rainfall.
